ST. CLOUD — Jamacy Johnson, a former resident of St. Cloud, has been handed a four-year prison sentence after being found responsible for the fatal drug overdose of her 2-year-old child. Johnson, 25, received credit for the 169 days she served in jail. The charges against her included 2nd-degree manslaughter culpable negligence.

The incident unfolded in April 2022 when St. Cloud Police responded to an emergency call at St. Cloud Hospital. The child, who had suffered cardiac arrest, brain damage, and was unresponsive, was rushed to the hospital. Tragically, the toddler succumbed to the overdose and died two days later.

Court records reveal that Johnson and her boyfriend had brought the child to the hospital the previous night, claiming that the toddler had ingested a Benadryl tablet. However, initial tests did not detect any traces of Benadryl in the child’s system. The couple left the hospital the next morning with the promise to return, but they never did.

During the investigation, a search warrant was executed at the couple’s apartment, leading to the discovery of fentanyl pills accessible to a child in the desk. The desk also had drug residue on its surface, along with paraphernalia typically used for fentanyl ingestion.

Further evidence from phone records revealed distressing search history, including articles related to child overdose, text conversations about purchasing fentanyl pills, and alleged photos and videos of Johnson smoking a substance off a piece of tin foil in the hospital bathroom.

An autopsy report confirmed that the toddler’s cause of death was fentanyl toxicity.

The sentencing decision has drawn attention and raised concerns about the tragic outcome that occurred due to the negligence and involvement of Johnson. The case sheds light on the devastating consequences of drug use around innocent children.

Child welfare organizations and advocates are urging parents and caregivers to be vigilant and keep potentially harmful substances out of reach of children. The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the need to prioritize child safety and the dire consequences that can arise when drug abuse intersects with parenting.

As more details emerge, the community hopes to see continued efforts to address the root causes of substance abuse and ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable children.
