Mosquito Experts Address Concerns Over Surging Population Threat in Florida
Experts from across the state of Florida are set to hold a virtual briefing to discuss the rising population of mosquitoes and the efforts being made to combat this issue. In addition, crews have been spraying a granular product into standing water and using helicopters to combat mosquito larvae. Rogers stressed that no habitat is too small, as mosquitoes can breed in any type of container.
Apart from malaria, authorities are also worried about the spread of dengue fever. The Florida Department of Health reported 23 locally acquired cases of dengue fever so far this year. However, Rogers noted that the current time frame is when disease-carrying mosquitoes are most likely to emerge. Following a major storm like Hurricane Idalia, floodwater mosquitoes hatch first and are known for their aggressive biting. About a week or two later, the disease vector species, which carry diseases such as malaria and dengue fever, become more prevalent.
