Ramdas Athawale, the Minister for State for Social Justice and Empowerment, has demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi, leader of India’s Congress party. Athawale alleges that Gandhi made misleading and defamatory statements about Prime Minister Narendra Modi which were given on foreign soil, therefore defaming the country and misrepresenting its position. Speaking at an event in the United States, Gandhi repeatedly attacked the ruling dispensation in India, specifically targeting Modi himself. Athawale claims that the people of the country know the success of Modi’s leadership over the past nine years, during which time all sectors of society have benefited from welfare schemes introduced by the central government, while Congress made promises but failed to deliver. Meanwhile, Congress and BJP have engaged in a verbal fight about comments made by Gandhi praising a Kerala-based political party. During his speech in the US, Gandhi accused Modi of making economic errors that harm democratic institutions, just weeks before a state dinner hosted by President Joe Biden hosted Modi.
