Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania has revealed its newly renovated Science Center, which features a state-of-the-art theater and STEM programs. The 118,689-square-foot building has undergone a four-year modernization project to create cutting-edge learning and performance spaces for students, faculty, staff, and community members.

The Science Center, originally opened in 1972, has been completely reinvented to provide students with access to the latest science and engineering technology. It now boasts robotic arms, 3D printers, and student hubs designed for collaboration and camaraderie. The Sustainability Lab within the center offers experiential learning opportunities for students in sustainable practices such as hydroponics and aquaponics, while the redesigned engineering labs have enabled students to design and build a hydrogen-fuel powered concept vehicle called INNOVA.

The centerpiece of the Science Center is the Theater at Montco Cultural Center, a world-class 563-seat theater designed by Spillman-Farmer Architects. Equipped with industry-leading acoustic, audio, rigging, lighting, and video systems by the renowned Walters-Storyk Design Group, the theater provides an immersive experience for audiences. It will host a variety of live theatrical performances, concerts, lectures, and film screenings.

Dr. Victoria L. Bastecki-Perez, President of MCCC, expressed pride in the reopening of the Science Center and emphasized the college’s commitment to providing transformative opportunities for students. James Bretz, Ph.D., Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at MCCC, added that the redesigned building offers a range of spaces for students and faculty to explore and succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

In addition to serving as a performance destination for the Philadelphia region, the theater will provide real-world learning experiences for students, as it is equipped with state-of-the-art sound, video, lighting, and rigging systems. David Ivory, Director of Sound Recording and Music Technology at MCCC, highlighted that the theater’s equipment rivals that of many four-year universities in the area, offering unparalleled learning opportunities.

The Montco Cultural Center is MCCC’s new platform encompassing all arts and culture programming. Designed as an interconnected campus, it includes not only the mainstage theater but also smaller black box theaters and fine art galleries. Brent Woods, Senior Director of Arts and Culture at MCCC, expressed excitement about welcoming patrons from across the region to experience exceptional performances and fine arts at the Montco Cultural Center.

Montgomery County Community College has been serving the educational needs of the community since 1964. With a comprehensive curriculum comprising over 100 associate degrees and certificate programs, the college also provides customized workforce training. It is recognized for its sustainability leadership, work with military veterans, community service, and use of classroom technology.

The renovation of the Science Center at MCCC demonstrates a commitment to preparing students for success in high-priority STEM occupations. The modernized building, along with the state-of-the-art theater, reflects the college’s dedication to providing holistic and transformative opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community members.
