Modular Secures $100M in Funding for AI Language and Engine Development
Modular Inc., an innovative technology company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) software development, has successfully raised $100 million in a recent funding round. This significant investment will be utilized to enhance Modular’s AI programming language and its flagship software tool, AI Engine, which aims to optimize neural networks for improved performance.
The funding round was led by General Catalyst, a prominent investment firm, with participation from GV, Alphabet Inc.’s startup fund, and several other institutional backers. The considerable financial injection will enable Modular to further develop its AI programming language, called Mojo, which is positioned as a faster alternative to Python, the programming language commonly used for AI model development.
Although Python’s simplicity enables developers to implement neural networks with ease, its performance can sometimes be lacking. Recognizing this limitation, Modular has developed Mojo, a programming language that shares a remarkably similar syntax to Python but boasts speeds up to 35,000 times faster.
Python’s slightly sluggish performance can be attributed to its memory safety mechanism, which safeguards against common bugs but slows down code execution. In contrast, Mojo incorporates a memory safety mechanism akin to Python’s but without the same performance impact. Moreover, Mojo reduces the need for manual coding to ensure optimal performance on multiple types of chips, offering developers a more efficient workflow.
Complementing Mojo is Modular’s groundbreaking software platform, AI Engine, designed to accelerate existing AI models regardless of whether they were written using Mojo or another language. AI Engine utilizes code translation techniques to convert the models into Mojo, where they can benefit from numerous optimizations. These optimizations significantly enhance hardware efficiency, resulting in neural networks that operate more than seven times faster without necessitating any code modifications.
One of the methods employed by AI Engine is constant calculations performed during inference, which involves processing data snippets. By executing these calculations at compile time, when the raw code is transformed into a functioning program, AI Engine eliminates the need for repetitive calculations during inference, thereby enhancing processing speed.
Operator fusion, another performance optimization technique employed by Modular, involves combining components of an AI model into a single, more efficient unit, requiring fewer hardware resources to run effectively.
Modular first unveiled AI Engine and Mojo in June, following a $30 million funding round. In a remarkably short time, over 120,000 developers have expressed interest in these revolutionary technologies. While AI Engine is currently accessible through an early access program, Mojo is set to launch early next month, creating further excitement within the AI software development community.
