The Congress party has accused the Indian government of using attempts to seek fresh public opinion on a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a way of promoting division and ignoring its failures. The comments followed the announcement by the 22nd Law Commission of India that it was seeking varied opinions on UCC, including from religious groups directly and the public in general. The Law Commission’s earlier 21st term had released a consultation paper challenging the concept of a UCC in August 2018 and claimed that it was “neither necessary nor desirable” at that stage. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the fresh move was indicative of the government’s ongoing “agenda of polarisation and diversion.”
