Mobile Data Use Experiences Skyrocketing Growth with 28% Surge in First Half of 2022
In recent years, the ease of accessing various content and applications with a single click has resulted in a substantial increase in internet usage. Entel, a prominent technology and telecommunications company, has reported an impressive 28% growth in mobile data usage during the first half of 2022, compared to the same period last year.
The national figures reveal a significant jump in mobile data consumption, surging from 822,348,178 gigabytes (GB) in 2022 to 1,056,538,578 GB in June this year. Notably, the regions of Magallanes, Antofagasta, and Tarapacá experienced remarkable increases of 62%, 59%, and 58%, respectively.
Entel’s study also sheds light on consumer behavior regarding the use of mobile applications and the driving digital trends. Surprisingly, 80% of the data consumed comes from only six applications. Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook remain the most popular choices, accounting for 21%, 14%, and 13.7% of usage, respectively. TikTok follows closely with 12%, alongside HTTPS at 11% and Netflix at around 8.5%. Other notable contenders in the top 10 include Google Play, Google Common, Spotify, and PlayStation.
When comparing the first half of this year to 2022, certain app categories experienced substantial growth. Download platforms witnessed a striking increase of 158%, while public transportation apps saw a surge of 144%. This includes platforms such as Google Play, App Store, Google Maps, and Waze GPS. Additionally, the social network sector recorded a considerable growth of 141%, followed by work-related apps at 125%, streaming at 112%, and gaming at 112%. However, apps related to purchases observed a decline of 26%.
The emergence of 5G in 2022 marked a pivotal moment, and Entel has announced the completion of 100% of Phase II of its fifth-generation network technical project. With a nationwide presence in all regions and 311 communes, the popularity of 5G technology continues to soar. Data usage on 5G networks during the first half of this year was seven times higher than the same period in 2022, showcasing the expansive deployment of this advanced network. Remarkably, the regions of Aysén, Atacama, and Antofagasta reported the most significant increases at 905 times, 93 times, and 78 times, respectively.
The data highlights the growing interest among people in 5G technology, which is evidenced by their preference for devices compatible with this network. The sharp increase in data traffic on 5G networks underscores its widespread adoption. The numbers speak volumes.
