Mizoram MPs Express Desire to Withdraw from NDA Due to Manipur Violence and UCC

Two Members of Parliament (MPs) from Mizoram, C Lalrosanga and K Vanlalvena, have expressed their desire to pull out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, they are awaiting approval from the Mizo National Front (MNF) leadership before making a final decision. Their decision stems from concerns over the ongoing violence in Manipur and the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

C Lalrosanga, the lone Lok Sabha member from Mizoram, stated that he could no longer support the NDA due to the injustice being carried out in Manipur. Lalrosanga emphasized that the sentiments of the people of Mizoram are with the Manipur tribal community, as they are considered kindred brothers of the Mizos. He criticized the BJP-led NDA government in Manipur for failing to prevent violence against the tribal people and called for the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh or the imposition of President’s rule in the state.

Similarly, K Vanlalvena, the lone Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram, expressed his discomfort with remaining a constituent of the NDA. However, he noted that the final decision on whether to continue in the alliance or withdraw lies with the MNF party leadership.

Both MPs were indirectly discouraged from raising the issues of Manipur violence and the UCC during the NDA representatives’ meeting. Consequently, they chose to skip the conclave held on Thursday.

The MNF is currently an alliance partner of the BJP-led NDA and a member of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). However, the MPs’ expressed desire to leave the alliance highlights growing discontent within the MNF regarding its association with the NDA.

The news of the MPs’ desire to withdraw from the NDA signifies the mounting tension over the Manipur violence and the proposed UCC. This development may have broader implications for the MNF and its relationship with the NDA, while also reflecting the sentiment of the people of Mizoram. The final decision will hinge on the MNF party leadership’s determination, which will shape the future course of political dynamics in Mizoram.
