The Mizoram government is ensuring that children displaced due to ethnic riots from Manipur continue their schooling in the state. The state’s school education department has asked all district and school authorities to provide admission to the affected children, even if proper documentation cannot be provided.

About 7,928 ethnic Zos or Mizos, mostly women, children, and the aged, have been forced to flee from violence-hit Manipur and take shelter in nine districts of Mizoram. The internally displaced people are currently lodged in temporary relief camps, with some also being sheltered by relatives.

The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), an apex student organization, is closely monitoring the situation and is in talks with the government. The Kuki-Mizo-Hmar- Zomi communities, who are collectively known as Kukis or Zo Hnahthlak in Manipur, share blood ties with the Mizos in Mizoram.

This turn of events highlights the importance of protecting the rights of children and ensuring their access to education, especially when they face turmoil and displacement. It also highlights the commitment of the Mizoram government to promote inclusive education and provide such children with the opportunity to continue their studies.
