Missing Students Found Dead in Manipur Forest, Investigation Handed over to CBI

Two missing students in Manipur, Phijam Hemjit and Hijam Linthoinggambi, have been found dead in a forest. The case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the wishes of the people of the state. Local authorities and security agencies were already investigating the case and conducting search operations to apprehend those responsible for the students’ murder.

The shocking discovery came after a photograph circulated, showing the two students sitting on the ground in a forest alongside two armed men. Another photo depicted them lying on the ground after being shot, with one of the victim’s heads missing. These images were taken on July 8, two days after the students went missing.

Phijam Hemjit, 20, and Hijam Linthoinggambi, 17, both Meiteis from Imphal, had disappeared on July 6. Concern grew as their whereabouts remained unknown despite efforts from security agencies and local residents taking to the streets to seek answers.

The Manipur chief minister’s secretariat confirmed the authenticity of the photos, expressing deep sorrow for the loss of the two students. The government has pledged swift and decisive action against the individuals responsible for this heinous crime. Justice for the murdered students is a top priority, and severe punishment awaits the perpetrators.

The state has been witnessing ethnic violence between the dominant Meiteis and Kukis since May, resulting in at least 175 deaths and displacing approximately 50,000 people. The Meiteis predominantly reside in the Imphal valley and plains, while the Kukis and other tribal groups inhabit the hill districts. To prevent armed confrontations, central forces have been stationed in buffer zones near the foothills. The directive stands that even state police require their presence when crossing these zones to avoid allegations of bias.

The public is urged to exercise restraint and trust the authorities to handle the investigation. The government remains committed to ensuring justice for the murdered students and bringing those responsible to account for their actions. The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing tensions in Manipur and highlights the need for sustained efforts to promote peace and harmony among different ethnic communities.
