The Muslim Personal Law Board of India has accused the Union Minority Affairs Ministry of mismanaging the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina this year. According to the board’s national general secretary, Moin Ahmed, poor organisation plagued pilgrims’ journeys from the issuing of application forms to their return to India. Ahmed has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for a high-level inquiry into the matter. He attributed the problem to the Union ministry’s unwarranted intervention in the work of the Haj Committee of India. Ahmed also alleged that more than 3,000 pilgrims from Varanasi and surrounding districts had to travel to Lucknow due to the cancellation of flights from the Prime Minister’s constituency. The announcement of Haj-2023 was additionally delayed by four months. Critics have suggested that the timing of the letter, just before an election, is unusual.
