Emerado family celebrates healthy baby boy after 137 days in the NICU

FARGO — An Emerado family is rejoicing following their baby boy’s triumphant journey through a harrowing 137-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sanford Health in Fargo. Henry Gajeski, born prematurely at just 22 weeks gestation, has defied the odds and emerged as a healthy and vibrant 8-month-old.

I didn’t think I would have a baby so soon. It was scary and hard to believe, said Jadeyn Gajeski, Henry’s mother.

Henry’s parents, Jadeyn and Andrew, faced an unimaginable situation when their son arrived four months before his due date on May 21, 2023. Weighing a mere 15.2 ounces, Henry battled through a series of challenges including weakened organs, bowel issues, and a heart infection.

Dr. Mohamed Mohamed, the neonatologist at Sanford Health who cared for Henry, expressed his amazement at the strength and resilience of the young baby. With survival rates around 60% for babies born at 22 weeks, it’s incredible to witness Henry’s progress. He’s exceeding expectations, he said.

The sight of their fragile newborn hooked up to various machines was heart-wrenching for Jadeyn and Andrew. Seeing him like that was tough, but knowing he was okay gave us some comfort, Andrew shared.

Months of unwavering dedication, hope, and prayers by both the medical team and the Gajeski family finally paid off. Henry began breathing on his own, marking a turning point in his journey. When he started breathing independently, that’s when it hit me that he would be okay, Jadeyn said.

Today, Henry is an energetic and playful 8-month-old who brings immense joy to his loved ones. From the care providers to his adoring parents, everyone is astounded by his progress and resilience.

For Dr. Mohamed, seeing Henry thrive is a testament to the power of his profession. When I see Henry now, interacting and doing so well, it fills me with joy. Moments like these make my job worthwhile, he shared.

Jadeyn, grateful for Henry’s progress, reflects on the beauty of hearing her baby cry. A lot of parents complain about their baby crying, but I didn’t get to experience that. Hearing Henry cry is a sound I’ll never take for granted, she said.

While Henry still undergoes weekly checkups, his future is bright. His remarkable journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for families navigating the challenges of premature birth.

This heartwarming story reminds us of the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and the unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to save lives. This is a testament to the power of love, hope, and the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

As Henry continues to flourish, his story serves as a beacon of hope for families facing similar challenges.
