The Minnesota Vikings reportedly discussed the possibility of trading for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance following starting quarterback Kirk Cousins’ season-ending injury. According to a report by Diana Russini of The Athletic, the Vikings held a brief discussion about acquiring Lance before the trade deadline on October 31.
However, the team ultimately decided against pursuing an active trade for Lance with the Cowboys and instead acquired Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. The Vikings’ goal was to minimize the impact on their team-building beyond 2023 when adding a quarterback.
This isn’t the first time the Vikings showed interest in trading for Lance. They previously explored the idea during the Scouting Combine but lost interest by the time Lance was traded to the Cowboys in late August. Cousins’ injury reignited their interest in the young quarterback.
The Cowboys acquired Lance for a fourth-round draft pick with the intention of having him as a long-term backup and insurance for starting quarterback Dak Prescott. It would likely have required more than a fourth-round pick for the Vikings to acquire Lance from Dallas.
Lance is currently the third-string quarterback for the Cowboys behind Prescott and Cooper Rush, yet to take a snap this season. Despite his limited playing time, the Cowboys have spoken highly of Lance’s work ethic and potential. Head coach Mike McCarthy praised Lance’s hard work and attention to detail, particularly in improving his footwork.
With the trade deadline now passed, the Cowboys will not be trading Lance anytime soon. However, it remains to be seen if the Vikings will rekindle their interest in the young quarterback during the offseason.
Overall, the Vikings briefly considered trading for Trey Lance following Kirk Cousins’ injury, but ultimately pursued a trade for Josh Dobbs instead. The Cowboys acquired Lance with a fourth-round pick and value his development as a long-term asset. Lance’s future with the Cowboys will be closely watched, and it will be interesting to see if the Vikings explore a potential trade again in the future.
