Ministry of Electronics and IT Unveils Aheesa and CalligoTech, Revolutionizing Semiconductor Design in India

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) made a groundbreaking announcement at SemiconIndia 2023 in Gandhinagar, introducing two semiconductor design startups that are set to revolutionize the industry in India. Aheesa Digital Innovations and Calligo Technologies have been selected under the SemiconIndia futureDESIGN DLI scheme, signifying the beginning of a new era in semiconductor technology in the country.

Aheesa, an emerging player from Chennai, brings with it a wealth of expertise in Telecom, Networking, and Cyber Security. Led by founders with an impressive 40 years of technological experience, Aheesa’s main goal is to launch the Aheesa Vihaan series of Networking SoCs, a remarkable homegrown innovation in India. One notable feature of the flagship Aheesa Vihaan is its utilization of C-DAC’s VEGA Processor Core, powered by the RISC-V architecture. This remarkable collaboration positions Aheesa to introduce the GPON/EPON ONT reference platform, tailored specifically for the telecom and networking giants in India.

On the other hand, CalligoTech, headquartered in Bengaluru, operates at the intersection of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), serving global industry leaders. Their mission is to enhance computing capabilities through both software and hardware acceleration. CalligoTech’s latest innovation introduces a computational accelerator that utilizes an innovative number system called POSITs, which is poised to redefine the standards of computing. Their ambitious plan involves marrying a RISC-V Processor with this co-processor, resulting in the efficient TUNGA Silicon. The outcome is the creation of a PCIe-based Accelerator Card named UTTUNGA, specifically designed to tackle HPC/AI workloads.

By supporting and promoting these cutting-edge startups, MeitY aims to fuel the growth of the semiconductor industry in India. With the introduction of Aheesa Vihaan and the UTTUNGA Accelerator Card, the nation is poised to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor landscape. These innovations hold the potential to drive technological advancements and foster innovation in various sectors, including telecommunications, networking, and artificial intelligence.

The MeitY’s investment in these startups reflects its commitment to transforming India into a hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing. Through these initiatives, the ministry strives to promote homegrown innovations and empower Indian companies to compete on a global scale.

Both Aheesa and CalligoTech have demonstrated their technical prowess and innovative capabilities. With a strong focus on collaboration and cutting-edge technologies, these startups are poised to contribute significantly to the growth of the semiconductor industry in India. The introduction of Aheesa Vihaan and the UTTUNGA Accelerator Card is a testament to India’s potential in becoming a key player in the global semiconductor market.

As the semiconductor landscape continues to evolve at a rapid pace, these initiatives by the Ministry of Electronics and IT pave the way for India to emerge as a prominent player in semiconductor design. The advancements brought forth by Aheesa and CalligoTech hold tremendous potential for various industries and will undoubtedly propel India’s journey towards technological self-reliance.

The SemiconIndia futureDESIGN DLI scheme provides the necessary support and platform for these startups to thrive and showcase their groundbreaking innovations. As they continue to push the boundaries of semiconductor design, Aheesa and CalligoTech will play a pivotal role in shaping India’s future in technology.

With the unveiling of Aheesa and CalligoTech, India stands on the cusp of a semiconductor revolution. These startups embody the spirit of innovation and pioneer breakthroughs that will propel the nation towards technological excellence. The Ministry of Electronics and IT’s unwavering commitment to supporting these startups marks a significant milestone in India’s journey to become a global semiconductor powerhouse.
