The focus is on the central display screen, which now functions as an all-in-one instrument cluster and infotainment system. One of the key features is the interactive OLED display, measuring 240mm (9.5 inches) in diameter, which is thinner than its predecessor. Mini’s 9th-generation interface aims to create an emotional connection with occupants through cutting-edge visual and audio themes, while drawing inspiration from the brand’s heritage.
Here are five things to know about this innovative system. Mini has equipped the system with nine distinct display modes that allow occupants to customize their cabin experience according to their preferences. These modes not only rearrange the information on the screen but also change the overall ambiance of the cabin. A projector located behind the screen can dress the dashboard in various colors based on the chosen mode.
Certain modes not only affect the display but also influence driving dynamics and sound. For example, the Go-Kart mode adopts a dynamic signature with red and black dials, dashboard, and sharper throttle response. The Timeless mode offers a classic Mini visual signature, particularly useful for night-time driving. The personalized mode allows users to choose their preferred parameters and even upload their own images as backgrounds.
Electric vehicles present challenges when it comes to sound. Mini has addressed this by integrating specific exhaust tones into models equipped with all-electric powertrains. For example, the Go-Kart mode includes a sporty, dynamic sound signature, while the Timeless mode recreates the sound signature of a well-calibrated combustion engine using a symphony composed of various gas-powered Mini models.
To enhance connectivity, the 9th-generation Mini interface will offer optional 5G connectivity and over-the-air updates. The Mini Digital Key will enable users to unlock and start the vehicle using their smartphones, without needing a key fob. This key can also be virtually transferred to others, making it convenient for peer-to-peer rental applications. Occupants can enjoy streaming content apps like Spotify and access the Air Console application that offers a range of games to be played by the driver or with other occupants using their smartphones.
Mini has also introduced a new virtual assistant named Spike, which responds to the command Hey Mini. Spike can recognize and distinguish between the voices of different occupants and interact with them through jokes and other interventions.
