Millions of Kia and Hyundai Vehicles Recalled Over Fire Risk

In a recent move, millions of Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been recalled due to concerns of potential fire hazards. The recall came after it was discovered that these vehicles could catch fire while parked or even while being driven. As a precautionary measure, Hyundai has advised drivers to park their cars outside until the necessary repairs are carried out.

The recall affects a combined total of 3.37 million vehicles in the United States, including popular models such as the Hyundai Accent, Azera, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata, and Tucson SUV. In addition, Kia models under recall include the Optima, Soul sedans, and Sportage SUV. These vehicles range from the model years 2010 to 2019.

According to federal safety officials, the risk of an engine compartment fire is increased due to a potential electrical short caused by a leak in the antilock brake system. Moisture, dirt, and dissolved metals in the brake fluid can weaken the sealing strength of an O-ring in the antilock brake motor shaft, leading to leaks and potential fire hazards.

As of now, there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this issue. However, several incidents of fires have been reported by both Hyundai and Kia owners. Hyundai reported 21 fires and 22 other incidents involving smoke, burning, and melting of parts, while Kia reported 10 fires and melting incidents.

This recall comes in the midst of rising concerns over the theft of Kia and Hyundai vehicles, as these cars have been targeted due to security flaws. In response, both companies have rolled out software updates to address the issue. Kia, in particular, has encountered challenges with their software update, as it does not work for everyone eligible for it, necessitating another software update.

To mitigate the theft risk, Kia has provided steering wheel locks to owners of affected vehicles, and more than 760,000 cars have already received the software upgrade. Kia is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to tackle car theft facilitated by social media. In addition to the recall, Hyundai has emphasized its commitment to customer safety and will replace the ABS module fuse in affected vehicles at no cost.

Owners of the affected models are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings until they can be repaired. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall announcement urging owners to follow this precautionary measure.

In conclusion, Kia and Hyundai have initiated a substantial recall due to the fire risk associated with their vehicles. The companies are working diligently to address the issue and have provided software updates and steering wheel locks to mitigate theft concerns. Owners are encouraged to take necessary precautions until their vehicles can be repaired, ensuring the safety of both drivers and their vehicles.
