Migos Rapper Quavo Takes Stand Against Gun Violence Following Tragic Loss
Quavo, one-third of the popular rap group Migos, has become a vocal advocate against gun violence after a devastating personal loss. Last year, he witnessed the tragic shooting and death of his nephew, Takeoff, which left him traumatized and determined to prevent others from experiencing similar pain. This week, Quavo is set to meet with influential political figures and participate in a panel discussion on combating gun violence during the Congressional Black Caucus legislative conference in Washington.
The untimely death of Takeoff in 2022 served as a catalyst for Quavo’s decision to speak out against gun violence. At the BET Awards earlier this summer, Quavo and his Migos bandmate Offset honored Takeoff, highlighting the need for action to address the alarming number of fatal shootings involving hip-hop artists in recent years.
Quavo’s own experience prompted him to step up and address the pressing issue. He shared, I feel like your calling comes at the least expected times… I have to do something about it, so it won’t happen to the masses – especially in our culture. I don’t want this to happen to the next person. I want to knock down these percentages.
During the panel discussion at the Congressional Black Caucus conference, Quavo will be joined by Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock, Representative Lucy McBath, who has been an activist in the wake of her son’s shooting death, and Greg Jackson from the Community Justice Action Fund. The discussion aims to focus on community intervention strategies, the fight against gun violence, and the power of advocacy.
Quavo emphasized the urgent need for better gun control, stating, We need to do better with the control of guns… We need to figure out how do we keep these types of incidents from happening to people going anywhere and thinking they can hurt somebody where it shouldn’t happen.
He expressed his desire to promote responsible gun usage and prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands. Quavo acknowledged the complexity of the issue, considering that even law enforcement carries guns, and he raised concerns about incidents of police brutality involving individuals from hip-hop culture.
Greg Jackson praised Quavo’s commitment to making a difference and commended him for engaging with members of Congress to advocate for impactful change. Jackson believes that Quavo’s voice and dedication to community violence intervention can help provide additional resources for those most at risk.
In response to the alarming rise in gun violence, Quavo and his family launched the Rocket Foundation last year in memory of Takeoff. Quavo has pledged $2 million to invest in community violence intervention and aims to develop more after-school programs in areas where community centers have been shut down.
The rapper understands the importance of keeping youth engaged in productive activities within a safe environment. He has reached out to fellow hip-hop artist Meek Mill, known for his activism in criminal justice reform, to garner support for his cause.
