Global tech giant Microsoft will soon launch an AI hub focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) product development and research in London. According to the CEO at Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleyman, the hub called Microsoft AI London will work on advancing AI language models and ensuring the right infrastructure is in place to support AI growth. Engineer and AI scientist Jordan Hoffmann, who previously worked at Inflection and DeepMind, will lead the new AI centre. No definitive timeline has been given by Microsoft on when the hub will officially open, but the firm has said the next step will be to start hiring talented staff who ‘want to work on the most interesting and challenging AI questions of our time’. There is an enormous pool of AI talent and expertise in the UK, and Microsoft AI plans to make a significant, long-term investment in the region as we begin hiring the best AI scientists and engineers into this new AI hub, said Suleyman, the co-founder of Google DeepMind, in a recent blog post. Suleyman pointed to the strong AI ecosystem in the UK that has fostered innovative AI businesses as a reason he is excited this commitment is being made to the UK. I know, through my close work with thought leaders in the UK Government business community and academia, that the country is committed to advancing AI responsibly and with a safety-first commitment to drive investment, innovation, and economic growth. Our decision to open this hub in the UK reflects this ambition, said Suleyman. The UK Government has made a concerted effort to lead the world on AI, with the AI Safety Summit last year seeing 28 countries, including the US, UK, and China, back an agreement to develop AI safely. Microsoft announced in recent months that a total of £2.5 billion in investment has been pledged to enhance the UK workforce for an AI future and build AI infrastructure including bringing 20,000 advanced GPUs to the country by 2026. The Microsoft Research Cambridge lab is already working on some of the most cutting-edge areas of AI research, with the London AI hub adding to the growing Microsoft AI presence in the country.
