An AI-based innovation programme, iMPEL-AI, was launched by global technology giant Microsoft, along with the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) and iCreate on Wednesday. As part of the initiative, as many as 1,100 AI innovators from India will be screened and given an opportunity to become most valuable players. The programme will focus on key sectors, such as healthcare, education, agriculture, smart cities, sustainability, and financial inclusion, to select and scale approximately 100 startups nationwide. These selected startups can build their projects using Azure OpenAI, with the top 25 receiving additional support from Microsoft’s Global Network to develop advanced and globally competitive products. In addition to incubation support, mentorship, and funding, chosen AI innovators will also receive access to GitHub Enterprise, as well as OpenAI and Azure credits to develop their minimum viable products. Furthermore, Microsoft and iCreate will provide AI skilling opportunities to 11,000 innovators, startups, and young individuals nationwide through Microsoft’s learning management system. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union minister of state for electronics and information technology, said, The MoU signed by Microsoft and iCreate to launch the iMPEL-AI program will catalyze AI startups in India. The Indian innovation ecosystem has reached an inflection point. The next wave of startups will come from emerging technologies like AI, semiconductors, and HPC.
