Michigan State Coach Mel Tucker Under Investigation for Sexual Harassment Allegations

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker is currently facing a university investigation into allegations of sexual harassment. Brenda Tracy, a well-known activist against sexual violence and a rape survivor, recently revealed the details of her complaint against Tucker. Tracy alleges that Tucker made sexually suggestive comments and masturbated during a phone call while she felt frozen and unable to respond.

Tracy had visited Michigan State University multiple times as an activist starting in 2021 and had developed a relationship with Tucker in her work on campus. She also claims there were other inappropriate incidents involving Tucker. Tracy expressed her disgust at the betrayal, stating, It’s like he sought me out just to betray me.

In response to the allegations, Tucker acknowledged that the phone call took place but insisted it was consensual. In a letter to the investigator, Tucker expressed remorse for his judgment and the situation but denied engaging in any misconduct.

As of now, Michigan State has not taken any action in response to the investigation. A formal hearing is scheduled for October 5-6. MSU Vice President Emily Guerrant stated that any similar complaint would be thoroughly reviewed and followed up by the university’s Office for Civil Rights in a confidential manner.

Michigan State has cited a privacy exemption in denying a Freedom of Information Act request regarding the investigation. ESPN is preparing to file a legal appeal in response.

Tucker, currently in his fourth year as coach, has started the season with a 2-0 record. However, the program’s overall performance has been inconsistent since he signed a multi-million dollar contract in his second season. A clause in Tucker’s contract allows MSU to terminate him for cause if his conduct is deemed to be morally objectionable or embarrassing to the university.

The allegations against Tucker come at a time when Michigan State is still dealing with the fallout from the Larry Nassar scandal. Nassar, a former MSU physician and USA Gymnastics doctor, was convicted of sexually assaulting numerous female athletes. The university faced criticism for failing to address complaints against Nassar for decades.

As the investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Mel Tucker continues, it remains to be seen what action Michigan State will take and how it will impact the reputation of the university and its football program.
