For instance, he met someone who ended up wheelchair-bound due to the disease. Acknowledging the severity of this condition, Russell formed a taskforce dedicated to spreading information and seeking solutions.
Despite progress and increased awareness, Lyme disease continues to worsen. Official statistics now report over 2,000 cases per year, and this number is likely an underestimate. Various factors contribute to the increasing prevalence of ticks, including climate change, altered land use patterns, and a rise in deer populations. Ticks have a three-year life cycle and are resilient, making them even more challenging to control.
The good news is that companies are developing vaccines for Lyme disease, and biotech firm Valneva, in collaboration with Pfizer, is on track to bring the first new product to market since a failed attempt two decades ago. Additionally, efforts are being made to educate people about the risks associated with ticks and how to minimize exposure. Wearing light-colored clothing, checking oneself after outdoor activities, and removing ticks carefully are crucial preventive measures.
Russell urges individuals who suspect they may have been bitten by a tick to monitor their symptoms closely. While seeking immediate medical attention is not necessary for every tick bite, it is essential to consult a doctor if a rash or other symptoms develop. Early detection and treatment are essential in countering the effects of Lyme disease. Russell knows this firsthand as his delayed diagnosis prevented him from participating in planned events.
