Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is feeling confident and injury-free ahead of his first game of the season. Tagovailoa suffered two concussions last year, causing concern for his health. However, he has since been cleared and is focused on the upcoming game without worrying about brain injuries.
During Week 3 of last year, Tagovailoa hyperextended his back after taking a hit in a game against the Buffalo Bills. It was initially suspected to be a concussion, but investigation confirmed he had passed the concussion protocol. However, in Week 4, he did suffer a concussion from a hit in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, resulting in his hospitalization and missing two games.
Later in the season, another concussion was discovered after Tagovailoa continued to play in a match against the Green Bay Packers. He did not return for the rest of the season following that game.
In April, Tagovailoa revealed he had considered retirement but ultimately decided to continue playing. Now, just days away from his first game since the Packers match, Tagovailoa is no longer worried about brain injuries and believes he is far ahead in terms of recovery.
The investigation into Tagovailoa’s concussions last season prompted an update in the concussion protocol. Any player showing signs of ataxia, causing balance or coordination issues, will be unable to return to the field.
The success of the Miami Dolphins’ season will largely depend on Tagovailoa’s health. Last year, the team went 8-5 in games he started, and he posted impressive numbers. If injury-free, Tagovailoa has the potential to surpass 4,600 passing yards over a full season.
The Dolphins made it to the playoffs as a wild card team last year and will rely on a healthy and confident Tagovailoa as they face the Chargers on Sunday.
