Miami-Dade Police Director Recovery Following Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound
Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez is currently recovering after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred three days ago when Ramirez, 52, allegedly shot himself during an apparent suicide attempt while attending a law enforcement conference in Tampa. Authorities and sources have confirmed that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her support for Ramirez and his family during this challenging time. She stated, I am glad that we were able to be by his side in this time of darkness (to) provide some light. The mayor further added that Ramirez, who is currently in critical but stable condition, is alert, awake, and responsive after undergoing surgery at Tampa General Hospital.
According to law enforcement sources, Ramirez and his wife were in Tampa for the summer meeting of the Florida’s Sheriff Association when the incident occurred. The couple left the conference’s welcome reception at around 6:30 p.m. and engaged in an argument outside the JW Marriot Hotel where the event was taking place. Eyewitnesses reported that Ramirez was seen threatening to take his own life.
Ramirez, a Democrat, had announced his intention to run for sheriff next year alongside Mayor Levine Cava. He was appointed as the police director in 2020 under former Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Two years later, Levine Cava promoted Ramirez to oversee the police department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue as the interim chief of public safety, a position he was later appointed to permanently.
The incident has shocked the Miami-Dade community, as Ramirez has been highly regarded for his dedication and leadership within the police department. As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue, the community has rallied together to offer support and prayers for Ramirez’s recovery.
The news of Ramirez’s self-inflicted gunshot wound serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for resources to assist individuals battling personal struggles. It is hoped that Ramirez’s recovery will not only bring healing to him and his family but also spark conversations and initiatives centered around mental health within law enforcement agencies.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Freddy Ramirez, his family, and the entire Miami-Dade family during this challenging time. Let us all come together during this period of adversity and support one another in overcoming personal hardships.
