Met Police Officer Imprisoned for Racist Messages Sent Through WhatsApp

A Metropolitan Police officer has been sentenced to 71 days in prison after sending racist messages to his ex-girlfriend via WhatsApp. PC Thomas Phillips, 34, sent a series of offensive messages to his former partner, PC Samantha Ryan, between April and May 2021. The messages contained racial slurs and derogatory language directed at Ryan’s new boyfriend, who is also a police officer. Phillips, who initially pleaded not guilty, later changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced on Friday.

The court heard that Phillips referred to Ryan’s new partner as a ‘n****r pr**k’ and a ‘mongrel sp**e’ in the WhatsApp messages. He also made derogatory remarks about their relationship, stating that the new boyfriend was genetically drawn to Ryan because of her appearance. Phillips tried to conceal his identity by arriving at court for sentencing with his face covered, but images of him in and out of uniform have now been released.

District Judge Louisa Ciecióra also imposed a two-year restraining order on Phillips, preventing him from contacting both Ryan and her new partner directly or indirectly. During the trial, the court heard statements from Ryan and her partner. Ryan explained that she was initially afraid to report the messages, feeling trapped by fear of what Phillips might do. PC Danny Gobin, Ryan’s new partner, expressed his shock and disgust at the racial slurs, associating them with the slave trade and criticizing Phillips for insulting not only him but also violating the oath to protect others.

Judge Ciecióra condemned Phillips’ conduct, stating that police officers are expected to uphold the values of society both on and off duty. The judge noted that Phillips’ comments went beyond the context of a broken relationship and demonstrated racial hatred and misogyny. The case has brought the police force and the wider criminal justice system into disrepute. Phillips’ family members wept as he was sentenced.

It is crucial to address incidents of racism and offensive behavior within law enforcement to maintain public trust and promote equality. The sentencing of PC Thomas Phillips sends a strong message that such conduct will not be tolerated. The Metropolitan Police must continue to ensure that officers adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and respect in their interactions with the public.
