Mertztown Man Arrested After Firing Shots Naked, Unveiling Illegal Marijuana Operation
A Mertztown man’s early morning escapades took a bizarre turn when he ingested psychedelic mushrooms and proceeded to ring doorbells and fire shots while completely naked. The incident, which unfolded on August 11th in the quiet Longswamp Township village, led to the discovery of an illegal marijuana-growing operation in the man’s basement.
According to investigators, state police responded to reports of gunshots and discovered 23-year-old Michael D. Ryan standing naked in the middle of the street, holding two pistols. Authorities quickly apprehended Ryan, later revealing that one of the pistols was a fake firearm. Due to his erratic behavior, Ryan was sedated by medics before being taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for assessment and later arraigned in Reading Central Court.
Ryan now faces a slew of charges, including aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, indecent exposure, manufacturing with attempt to deliver marijuana, and related counts. State troopers, while ensuring the safety of nearby residents, entered Ryan’s home and stumbled upon equipment consistent with an illicit marijuana-growing operation, including grow lights, a tent, air-circulation equipment, humidifiers, and two cannabis plants.
Following the initial discovery, investigators obtained a search warrant and subsequently found and seized the marijuana plants, growing equipment and supplies, as well as packaging materials. Additionally, officers confiscated a loaded AR-15, a .308 hunting rifle, and a loaded 9 mm handgun with an extended magazine.
The investigation into the gunfire incident is ongoing, with troopers interviewing neighbors who were awakened by the shots. One car parked on the street had five bullet holes along the passenger side, further underscoring the danger posed by Ryan’s actions.
According to interviews with a female companion, who was described as a victim, she and Ryan consumed psychedelic mushrooms the night before the incident. After returning to Ryan’s residence, he became increasingly agitated and violent towards her, escalating to physical abuse. Eventually, he ventured outside, began ringing doorbells, and fired multiple shots, leaving the woman fearing for her safety.
