Mental Health Services Surge Amid Pandemic Raises Concerns for Insurance Companies

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on mental health worldwide. As people continue to grapple with the various stressors and anxieties brought on by the crisis, the demand for mental health services has surged. While this increase in utilization is encouraging for those seeking support, it has also prompted concerns within the insurance industry.

According to a recent study conducted by the nonprofit research organization RAND, there has been a substantial rise in the use of mental health services during the pandemic. The researchers analyzed claims from approximately 7 million commercially insured adults from January 2019 to August 2022, focusing on anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The study revealed that during the acute phase of the pandemic, from March 2020 to December 2020, in-person mental health services dropped by 40 percent, while tele-mental health services increased tenfold compared to the previous year. Overall, there was a 22 percent increase in the use of mental health services during this period.

Interestingly, the utilization of tele-mental health services remained stable at approximately ten times pre-pandemic levels during the post-acute period, from December 2020 to August 2022. In contrast, in-person mental health services saw a monthly increase of 2.2 percent in this same timeframe. By August 2022, in-person services had returned to 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels, resulting in an overall mental health service utilization that was nearly 39 percent higher than before the pandemic.

While the surge in mental health service utilization is an encouraging sign that individuals are seeking support, it has raised concerns among insurance companies. The increase in demand inevitably comes with a higher cost, and insurers may be hesitant to continue covering these services at current levels. Jonathan Cantor, lead author of the study and a policy researcher at RAND, warns that if the greater utilization of mental health services drives higher healthcare spending, insurers may begin pushing back on this new status quo.

However, it is essential to recognize the value of mental health services and the importance of continued access for those in need. The pandemic has taken a toll on people’s well-being, and ensuring access to adequate support is crucial for their recovery and resilience. Balancing the financial concerns of insurance companies with the long-term benefits of mental health services will be a challenge that policymakers and stakeholders must address.
