A new report highlights the benefits of menstrual cups, which can reduce the generation of non-biodegradable waste by 99% compared to disposable sanitary pads. The report, “Why India needs to move beyond sanitary pads”, was published by Action Research and Training for Health (ARTH) and launched by eminent scientist Soumya Swaminathan on World Environment Day. Swaminathan said the study showed that if a woman used commercially-made disposable sanitary pads, she would generate 14.1 kg of non-biodegradable waste in her lifetime, compared to just 0.06 kg if she used a menstrual cup. The report’s authors recommended greater promotion of menstrual cups as a sustainable, cost-effective and hygienic alternative to pads, which remain the most commonly used menstrual hygiene product in India.
