Media Mogul Lebedev Claims Discrimination Amid Ukraine Conflict
Russian-born British media tycoon, Evgeny Lebedev, has accused the UK of Russophobia, asserting that he and his newspaper have been snubbed by businesses and institutions due to the war in Ukraine. Lebedev, controversially appointed to the House of Lords in 2020 by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, argues that the UK has a culture of virtue-signalling, pointing to the case of Nigel Farage, whose bank account was closed partly due to his right-wing political views.
In an op-ed published in the Evening Standard newspaper, Lebedev criticized what he perceived as corporate hypocrisy in the UK, claiming that various entities have rejected his business since the Ukraine conflict began. He stated that these businesses, which previously sought his attention, are now displaying anti-Russian sentiment and passing judgment on him based solely on hearsay.
Lebedev, who obtained British citizenship in 2010 and also owns the Independent newspaper, cited multiple instances of alleged companies and organizations refusing to work with him. Expressing his frustration, he remarked, Businesses that were once so far up my backside you couldn’t see their legs are now deluded enough to think they can pass judgment on me.
As the son of Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB officer turned oligarch, Lebedev has faced criticism in the UK, especially regarding his peerage appointment. Despite reported objections from UK intelligence chiefs, Boris Johnson nominated him for a life peerage. Lebedev supported Johnson during his tenure as Mayor of London.
In his article, Lebedev mentioned that he spoke out against Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine shortly after it began last year but believes he has received little credit for doing so. He lamented that his family has been misrepresented in the media to such an extent that their name is now seen as a liability. Lebedev concluded his piece by calling for a society that moves away from guilt by association and rash judgments.
