LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has awarded over $7 million in funding to various local organizations to address violence in communities. This significant investment aims to support the efforts of these organizations in preventing violence and reducing its adverse outcomes across the state.

Through a rigorous Request for Proposal (RFP) process, eight organizations were chosen as recipients of the funding. The selected awardees were required to demonstrate their commitment to creating safe environments for all Michigan residents, especially in their homes, schools, and communities. MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel emphasized the importance of this funding in assisting local organizations and leaders in their initiatives to combat violence.

It is vital that all Michigan residents feel safe in their daily lives, stated Hertel. By providing this funding, we are empowering local organizations and leaders to actively prevent violence and mitigate its harmful consequences within their communities.

The MDHHS received a substantial response to the RFP, with 26 organizations from across the state submitting applications. These organizations collectively requested over $26 million in funding to support their projects. However, due to budgetary limitations, the funding was distributed among the eight selected organizations.

The funding is intended to sustain two-year projects that will commence on January 1, 2025, and conclude on September 30, 2025. This extended duration allows for comprehensive planning, implementation, and evaluation of the violence intervention projects.

Efforts to address community violence have become increasingly crucial in recent times, as many regions contend with rising crime rates and societal challenges. The financial assistance provided by MDHHS enables local organizations to make a significant difference by actively engaging with their communities and focusing on violence prevention.

By prioritizing the needs and interests of the target audience, local organizations can foster safer and more secure environments where residents can thrive. The award recipients, supported by the MDHHS, are dedicated to implementing innovative strategies that will help deter violence and create lasting positive change.

With the funding now secured, these organizations can commence their projects and work diligently towards reducing violence and creating safer communities throughout Michigan. The investments made by the MDHHS highlight the commitment to establishing a secure environment where residents can live without fear.

The MDHHS remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing community violence comprehensively. Through ongoing collaboration and support, the department aims to empower local organizations in their mission to safeguard Michigan communities.
