Japanese international center-back Maya Yoshida has made a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side LA Galaxy, seeking a new challenge after playing in various top European leagues. The experienced defender, who previously represented Southampton in England, Sampdoria in Italy, and Schalke 04 in Germany, believes that joining LA Galaxy is the right decision at this stage of his career.
Yoshida, aged 34, brings a wealth of experience to the team and is expected to mentor young talent like 19-year-old Jalen Neal. In his first press conference with LA Galaxy, Yoshida expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to be an experienced presence, stating that it aligns with what the club and coach desire. He also mentioned that his preferred role extends beyond being a top-quality defender, as he enjoys participating in the team’s possession-based style of play.
The defender shared his positive impressions of LA Galaxy’s facilities, highlighting that they are even superior to those of his previous clubs in Germany and Italy. He likened the organization and direction of LA Galaxy to that of a Premier League club, emphasizing the importance of getting the team back on track and aiming for playoff qualification in the current season.
However, LA Galaxy has some work to do, considering their current position as they sit in 13th place in the Western Conference standings and are seven points away from a playoff spot. With 22 points so far, the team must rejuvenate its performance to achieve their season’s target. Their next match against Real Salt Lake is scheduled for August 20 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
