Premier League giants Manchester City are set to sign Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea for an initial fee of £25m, which is being hailed as a steal for the four-time Champions League winner. The midfielder is expected to be City’s best-value acquisition since the purchase of Ilkay Gundogan in 2016. Although a few high-profile players could leave the Etihad, Pep Guardiola is wasting no time in securing his midfield department with Kovacic, who brings a unique combination of physicality and passing finesse to his game.
Guardiola, who is looking to strengthen his defence, has also shown interest in Josko Gvardiol, Kovacic’s Croatian teammate and RB Leipzig centre-back. Chelsea have been following Gvardiol for quite some time as well, and Kovacic had been previously keen on him joining Stamford Bridge. City’s interest in the young centre-back could become more favourable now that Kovacic is on the team and can help convince him to join.
With City eager to maintain their dominance in the league, the addition of Kovacic, who brings experience and strength, coupled with Pep’s hugely celebrated tactical mind, they will appear an even more attractive prospect to young players. Joining a Treble-winning outfit and benefitting from one of the greatest minds in football would be an opportunity too good to refuse for any young prospect, regardless of their preferred positions and playing styles.
