Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has declared a state of emergency due to a surge in migrants in the state and is urgently calling for federal assistance. In a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Healey highlighted the strain on the state’s resources, with approximately 5,500 migrants, including young children and pregnant individuals, needing care. The governor stated that the emergency was a result of various factors, including federal immigration policies, inadequate affordable housing production, and the termination of COVID-era food and housing security programs.
Governor Healey emphasized that Massachusetts had taken steps to address the issue but could no longer handle it alone. The state has already spent $45 million on caring for the growing number of migrants. The situation worsened in September when Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent around 50 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The island had to mobilize resources and eventually transfer the migrants to Joint Base Cape Cod.
Massachusetts is grappling with the influx of illegal migration while New York City faces similar challenges, caring for over 57,000 migrants. At the same time, the southern border is experiencing an increase in illegal migration rates, with Border Patrol apprehending approximately 130,000 migrants in July, compared to around 99,000 in June.
