More than two lakh people are set to leave Chennai on government buses on Friday night. Around 82,000 had already reserved tickets to travel on 3,100 buses on Friday. Government is prepared to operate additional buses if the crowd swells in the night, said transport minister S S Sivasankar.

Another one lakh will be traveling on private omnibuses. For one last time, these buses have been allowed to depart from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Koyambedu, and take the Vadapalani-Kathipara-Tambaram route. From the next festival, they will leave from Kilambakkam.

Though more police workforce and marshals have been deployed on the GST Road, traffic was chaotic on Friday right from Guindy to Chengalpet. Travel delays were reported from Paranur and Athur (Tindivanam) toll plazas too.
