Over 12 individuals, predominantly women, including a female journalist, sustained injuries during a mass court arrest protest in Imphal. Security forces fired upon the protesters as thousands of people marched towards various police stations. The incident escalated the situation, leading to the imposition of a curfew in Imphal West and Imphal East districts. This unrest followed a 48-hour general strike that concluded the day before, sparked by the arrest of five village defenders by the Manipur Police.

The defenders were taken into custody due to their possession of arms and ammunition, prompting a public meeting organized by several coordinating committees to rally for a mass court arrest at the nearest police station. Despite heavy rainfall, people responded to the call and began marching towards the designated police stations. However, their progress was impeded by the deployment of security personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) members.

Protesters argued that they were compelled to defend themselves after clashes erupted on May 3 in Churachandpur district between two ethnic groups. They claimed that heavily armed individuals were attacking innocent people, leaving them with no choice but to protect themselves. They criticized the actions of Manipur Police and other security personnel, highlighting that those who defended people in the valley areas were being arrested while individuals from the opposing ethnic group were freely roaming in the hill districts of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Tengnoupal.

In an additional grievance, they pointed out that militants and civilians openly brandished weapons and partook in a march during Independence Day celebrations in Churachandpur without any repercussions or arrests. The protesters demanded equal treatment and called for an end to the violence in all parts of the state.

The ongoing tensions have prompted concerns, with security forces clashing with protesters and resulting in injuries. The imposition of curfews reflects the gravity of the situation. The arrest of the village defenders has ignited widespread discontent, leading to demonstrations and the demand for equal actions by security forces against all those involved in the conflict.

The clash between ethnic groups and the subsequent actions by security forces raise questions about the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the tensions in Manipur. To ensure a peaceful resolution, it is crucial for all parties involved to engage in dialogue and seek solutions that promote harmony and understanding among different communities. The protection of all citizens and their rights is of paramount importance in fostering a more inclusive and stable society.
