Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer has been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This recognition comes two years after his former player, Bill Cowher, passionately advocated for Schottenheimer’s induction.
Schottenheimer coached the Chiefs from 1989 to 1998, amassing 101 victories with the team. He had a total of 200 career victories and coached for 21 seasons before his passing in 2021.
Schottenheimer is among the 12 coach/contributors being considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024. The other candidates in this category include Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Frank Bucko Kilroy, Robert Kraft, Buddy Parker, Dan Reeves, Art Rooney Jr., Mike Shanahan, Clark Shaughnessy, John Wooten, and Lloyd Wells.
Wells, who played a significant role in securing key players for the Chiefs, is being recognized for his contributions as the first full-time Black scout in the NFL. Wells brought notable players like Otis Taylor to the team. Taylor, who spent 11 seasons with the Chiefs, played a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl IV victory. Throughout his career, Taylor achieved 7,306 receiving yards and 57 touchdown catches.
In addition to the coach/contributor nominations, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee has announced 12 candidates for enshrinement. Among them is Albert Lewis, who played 16 seasons in the NFL, with 11 of those seasons dedicated to the Chiefs. Lewis was a four-time Pro Bowler and recorded 38 interceptions during his career.
The coach/contributor committee will meet on August 15th to select one finalist for consideration in the Class of 2024. The Seniors Committee will convene on August 22nd and may select up to three seniors for final consideration.
As the selection process unfolds, supporters of Marty Schottenheimer, Otis Taylor, and Albert Lewis eagerly await the outcomes for these influential figures in Kansas City Chiefs history. Both the coaching perspective and player contributions are crucial when determining who will join the ranks of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s esteemed Class of 2024.
