Plans to strengthen maritime safety – The Fiji Times

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is taking proactive measures to enhance maritime safety in response to recent incidents of boat capsizing that have resulted in tragic loss of lives. In an interview with The Fiji Times’ online news portal, The Lens@177, MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in achieving this goal.

Mr. Cawaki revealed that training initiatives focused on safety and industry regulations were already underway in Tavua, Malolo, and Yasawa. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration of various stakeholders, including the police and Fiji Biosecurity, who are working closely with MSAF to address the pressing issue. Notably, a task force will be formed this year, with the involvement of the police, to further strengthen efforts in safeguarding maritime safety.

Recognizing the significance of community involvement, MSAF intends to collaborate with village leaders and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs to foster a culture of safety and protect the maritime environment. Mr. Cawaki acknowledged the historical reliance on MSAF’s individual efforts, stating, What I’ve seen in the past is that MSAF was working alone, and the load is big. However, this approach will now evolve through increased coordination with relevant authorities.

To bolster its reach, MSAF plans to liaise with Fiji Navy, fisheries, and the Lands Department to address concerns related to fishing boats and foreshore management. These collaborative efforts are expected to expand MSAF’s network and facilitate more comprehensive safety measures.

The urgency to enhance maritime safety comes in the wake of several tragic incidents involving boat capsizing and subsequent loss of life. The establishment of a task force, coupled with the engagement of stakeholders, is a crucial step towards preventing future tragedies. MSAF’s concerted efforts to work hand in hand with village leaders, government agencies, and law enforcement entities highlight its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring a secure maritime environment.

With a renewed vision and collaborative approach, MSAF aims to create robust safety protocols and regulations that will certify the seaworthiness of vessels and mitigate risks. By weaving together the invaluable expertise of various stakeholders, MSAF hopes to not only address present challenges but also proactively identify potential risks before they escalate.

Maritime safety remains a pressing concern globally, and Fiji is taking strides to strengthen its safety measures by embracing a collective responsibility approach. As MSAF forges ahead with its plans to fortify maritime safety, the hopes are high that these concerted efforts will create a safer, more secure marine environment for all stakeholders involved. Through extensive training, effective stakeholder engagement, and innovative safety protocols, Fiji’s journey towards maritime excellence continues, with the goal of preventing further tragic incidents at sea.
