The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has announced plans to redesign the junction at Labour Statue in order to create a safer environment for pedestrians. After studying the area, the police will run a trial for three weeks, starting on Tuesday, during which they will install delineators and other equipment to redefine the junction boundary, create separate lanes for pedestrian movement and install designated crossing lanes and ramps. The redesign aims to reduce the area of the junction and eliminate any residual spaces that permit haphazard vehicle movement. Additionally, a dedicated waiting area for pedestrians will be added, while the carrying capacity of the medians will be optimised. A spokesperson for the GCTP said that the changes were implemented because of 30 accidents that had occurred at the junction in the past three years. During weekends, an estimated 10,000 individuals cross the area daily.
In addition, the police plan on optimizing signals at the junction, installing proper stop lines and directional arrows, and incorporating aesthetics into the redesign. The junction improvement programme will be observed for up to five weeks before any physical alterations are made, and stakeholders will be invited to provide input and feedback.
The Greater Chennai Traffic Police is a traffic law enforcement agency that operates in Chennai, India. The organisation is committed to eliminating traffic accidents and promoting traffic safety.
Samay Singh Meena is the DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) of traffic for the East division of Chennai and oversaw the development of the pedestrian-friendly junction at Labour Statue.
