Saltburn producer Margot Robbie has spoken out about the controversial bathtub and grave scenes in the movie, which have left audiences shocked. The film, now available on Amazon Prime, has sparked discussions on social media, with viewers feeling uncomfortable about the explicit content.
One particular scene involving actor Barry Keoghan, who plays Oliver Quick, has raised eyebrows. In the scene, Oliver dives into his best friend Felix Catton’s bath and starts slurping up the water, much to the surprise of the audience. While many were taken aback by the scene, Margot Robbie, the boss behind Saltburn, confessed that she wasn’t shocked at all.
In an interview, Robbie revealed that the bathtub scene didn’t feel shocking to her when she first read the script. She praised the film’s creator, Emerald Fennell, for skillfully immersing viewers into the world of the movie. Robbie explained that Fennell’s ability to set the tone and engage the audience from the start prepared them for the shocking scenes. She believed that Fennell intentionally aimed to evoke a mix of disgust and fascination from the viewers.
Robbie stated, I think she wanted you to be equally as disgusted as you are titillated, and equally as shocked as you are by finding that depravity in yourself. She further praised Fennell’s ability to tap into viewers’ minds, referring to the bathtub scene as the watercooler moment that would provoke discussions amongst fans for weeks.
Meanwhile, actor Jacob Elordi, who played Felix in the film, expressed apprehension about the audience’s response to the movie. However, he also expressed pride in his work on the film. He mentioned that the scene involving his character having sex with Felix’s grave was completely improvised, showcasing Fennell’s creativity.
Barry Keoghan, who played Oliver, also shared his experience of filming the controversial scenes. He revealed that Fennell planted the idea of the grave scene and he readily embraced it without any doubts. Keoghan praised Fennell’s ability to create thought-provoking moments in the movie.
Despite the mixed reactions from viewers, Saltburn continues to generate buzz and spark discussions. The film’s exploration of taboo subjects and boundary-pushing scenes has certainly left a lasting impact on audiences.
