Leicestershire Identified as Hotspot for the UK’s Most Dangerous Plant

PlantTracker has produced a map pinpointing the locations of giant hogweed, which has been labeled Britain’s most dangerous plant. The invasive plant, known for its immense height of up to 20 feet, has gained notoriety for causing severe burns and other health issues. Leicestershire, in particular, has been identified as a hotspot for giant hogweed.

Several cases of giant hogweed have been reported in Leicestershire over the years, with one incident occurring in Market Bosworth last summer. This particular incident prompted Leicestershire County Council to issue a warning to the public to stay away from the plant for their own safety. The map created by PlantTracker highlights seven reported and confirmed cases of giant hogweed in Leicestershire, with additional cases in neighboring areas such as Oakham in Rutland and Long Eaton near the Leicestershire border.

Notably, the city of Leicester itself does not have any confirmed cases of giant hogweed according to PlantTracker’s data. The closest confirmed case was found in Market Bosworth Country Park last year. Another case was also reported in Bilstone Road, Bilstone, which is in close proximity to Market Bosworth.

The map also reveals a confirmed case of giant hogweed near Main Street in Ratcliffe Culey and another close to the A5 near Atherstone, which shares a border with Leicestershire. Moving along the highway towards Hinckley, a giant hogweed has been reported near Logix Road in the town.

In North West Leicestershire, two giant hogweed plants were found in close proximity. The first was discovered near Coalville in Swannington’s St George’s Hill, while the second was located near the Hermitage Recreation Ground in Whitwick, also near Coalville.

Experts from WhatShed have labeled giant hogweed as one of Britain’s most dangerous plants, advising people to stay away if they encounter it. The plant poses risks with even the slightest touch, causing blisters and burns. Anyone who comes into contact with the plant is urged to wash the affected area immediately, seek medical advice, and move indoors away from direct sunlight to reduce the risk of burning.

Individuals who spot giant hogweed are encouraged to report their sightings to Leicestershire County Council’s country parks team by calling 0116 305 5000 or emailing countryparks@leics.gov.uk. Alongside their reports, individuals should provide a photograph and location of the sighting.

Giant hogweed poses a significant danger to public safety, and being aware of its presence is crucial. By identifying the hotspots for this dangerous plant, PlantTracker’s map serves as a valuable tool in helping to prevent accidents and protect the well-being of individuals in Leicestershire and beyond.
