The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, has announced that 4,000 prefabricated temporary homes would be built to accommodate those who have been displaced due to ongoing ethnic violence in the region. Since May 3, 120 people have lost their lives and around 400 others have been injured. Singh expressed sympathy for those affected, particularly for students, women, and the elderly, adding that the government is providing them with basic necessities. He said that construction of the temporary homes, which are made from prefabricated materials, have already started. Once completed, the displaced will be relocated there before moving to permanent settlements. In recent months, about 50,650 people have been displaced and are sheltered in 350 camps. Singh appealed to the Meitei community members to maintain peace and harmony. He also discussed the situation with his Mizoram counterpart, who assured him that people from the Meitei community residing in Mizoram would be provided with safety and security. Meanwhile, the All Assam Manipuri Youths’ Association (AAMYA), who announced an indefinite economic blockade on the National Highway connecting Assam and Mizoram on Sunday, has called it off.
