Keir Johnston, 38, appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on July 10 to face allegations of a nearly 11-year campaign of domestic violence and coercive control over his wife that culminated in a violent attack on Colonsay island.
The couple, originally from the island themselves, made headlines across the globe in 2015 when an image of his wife’s mother’s dress sparked a viral debate about its colors, with people divided over whether it was white and gold or blue and black. Their sudden fame led them to appear on the popular Ellen DeGeneres Show in America. However, according to prosecutors, the relationship soon turned sour and escalated into an alleged murder attempt at a holiday home on Colonsay.
Johnston is accused of assaulting his partner on multiple occasions between August 2011 and March 2019. The alleged incidents include placing his hands around her neck, pursuing her, dragging her from a car, and striking her through an open window. Other charges claim that between April 2019 and March 2022, Johnston engaged in threatening and controlling behavior towards his wife, including choking her, brandishing a knife, isolating her from friends, and monitoring her movements.
The allegations culminated in a violent attack at a cottage on Colonsay on March 6 last year. Prosecutors state that Johnston pinned his wife to the ground, placed his hands around her neck to restrict her breathing, and threatened her with a knife. According to the Crown, his actions were intended to endanger her life, with the intent to murder her.
Johnston, denying all charges, is scheduled to appear for a further preliminary hearing on July 20, and a trial is likely to take place later this year.
