A Co Down man is set to face trial after being accused of throwing bleach at a female victim in an alleged attempt to maim her. Gerard McGhee, 26, appeared in Downpatrick Magistrates Court via video-link from prison and confirmed his awareness of the four charges against him. The incident, which occurred on April 20 last year, involved the assault of the woman and the hurling of corrosive material, specifically bleach, with the intention to burn, maim, disfigure, or disable her. McGhee is also charged with perverting the course of justice by sending a text message to the alleged victim, urging her not to go to court. The court acknowledged the prima facie case against the accused, which was recognized by the defense. McGhee declined to comment on the charges or provide evidence in his defense. He was remanded back into custody, with the trial date yet to be set.
