Title: Man Receives Life Imprisonment for Raping His Troubled Drug Addict Mother
A 33-year-old man from Haridevpur, Kolkata, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court after being found guilty of the heinous crime of raping his own mother. The disturbing incidents occurred four years ago, and the man, known to be a severe drug addict, had undergone rehabilitation programs multiple times prior to 2019.
According to a report from The Times of India, the victim, a 65-year-old woman with a troubled past, lodged a complaint on May 5, 2019, at the Haridevpur police station in West Bengal. She revealed her horrifying experience of living alone with her younger son following her elder son’s marriage and relocation to another property.
The victim detailed the traumatic incidents, disclosing that her son first assaulted her on April 14, an ordeal that left her too frightened to speak out due to societal stigma. Tragically, her nightmare escalated when her son subjected her to an even more violent assault on May 5. Subsequently, the accused was apprehended, and he spent seven-and-a-half months in custody before the court delivered its verdict.
The court’s decision, which includes a life sentence and a fine of Rs 50,000, was influenced by a comprehensive range of evidence, including the victim’s medical assessment, her testimony, and statements provided by seven additional witnesses. These witnesses included her elder son, the two tenants residing beneath her at the time of the incidents, and two medical practitioners who examined both the victim and the accused.
It is crucial to address such incidents that shake the foundations of society. Sexual assault, especially when perpetrated against family members, undermines the trust and security within relationships. The court’s ruling in this case sends a strong message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated, and justice will be served.
In another shocking incident in West Bengal, a woman traveling with her infant son was raped in an unreserved coach of the Sifhung Express. The assault took place during a journey from Guwahati, Assam, to Alipurduar junction station in north Bengal. The alleged perpetrators, identified as Moinul Haque and N Abdul, were swiftly apprehended by the West Bengal Government Railway Police (GRP) and presented before an Alipurduar court.
According to the victim, the assault occurred after the perpetrators boarded the coach at Kokrajhar station. Despite her shock, she managed to disembark at Alipurduar junction and sought help from the GRP, accompanied by her child. The accused were apprehended within two hours of the incident.
These distressing incidents emphasize the urgent need for society to address the pervasive issue of sexual violence against women. It is crucial that individuals and communities come together to create an environment that prioritizes their safety and well-being.
As the legal system takes its course and holds the perpetrators accountable, it is essential to support and empower victims of sexual violence. By raising awareness, challenging harmful attitudes, and fostering a culture of respect and consent, we can strive towards a society free from such horrific acts.
