Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Sexually Harassing Minor Girl Who Tragically Ended Her Life
A 23-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually harassing a 16-year-old girl, who subsequently took her own life. The Shivamogga court in Karnataka, India, found the accused guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 (POCSO Act) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The tragic incident occurred in 2020 when the young man, hailing from Thirthahalli taluk, sexually harassed the minor girl. Devastated by the traumatic experience, the girl sadly resorted to suicide. Her grieving father filed a formal complaint, leading to the registration of the case by Ripponpet police in Hosanagar taluk. The investigation was conducted by the then Police Inspector of Hosanagar, Girish B.C., who subsequently filed the charge sheet.
After due legal proceedings, the Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track Special Court-1), Latha, delivered the judgment on November 4. In addition to the rigorous imprisonment, the court imposed a penalty of ₹1.25 lakh on the convicted individual. If he fails to pay the penalty, he will face an additional six months of imprisonment. Furthermore, the court has ordered the State government to provide a relief fund of ₹17 lakh to the victim’s bereaved family.
