Schenectady Man Pleads Guilty to Felony Gun Charge

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – Raki Johnson, a 25-year-old resident of Schenectady, has pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Johnson’s sentencing is scheduled for February 7, 2024.

Johnson’s arrest occurred on August 20, when an officer from the Saratoga Springs Police Department discovered a parked car with an expired registration while on foot patrol in the area of Caroline Street. Inside the vehicle, Johnson was found seated, and a 9mm semi-automatic Taurus handgun was in plain sight within the rear passenger compartment.

Following the discovery, Johnson was promptly taken into custody. Authorities seized the firearm, which contained nine rounds of ammunition, and observed that it had been reported stolen to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina.

Saratoga Springs Police Department spokesperson, John Miller, expressed concern over the incident, stating, This case is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal firearms circulating in our communities. We are determined to uphold the law and prevent further harm.

The guilty plea made by Johnson brings attention to the issue of illegal gun possession and highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement officials to address this concern. The severity of the charge reflects the potential risks associated with individuals unlawfully possessing firearms.

As the sentencing date of February 7, 2024 approaches, it remains to be seen what penalties Johnson may face for this felony charge. The court will take into account his guilty plea and the circumstances surrounding the case in determining an appropriate sentence.

The incident involving Johnson serves as a call to action for law enforcement agencies to continue their efforts in removing illegally possessed firearms from the streets. The collaboration between local and state officials, along with citizens playing an active role in reporting suspicious activities, remains vital in combating this issue.

This case underscores the need for ongoing discussions and initiatives regarding gun control measures aimed at reducing gun violence and enhancing public safety. As communities strive to find effective solutions, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the stakes at hand.

Moving forward, it will be incumbent upon the court to ensure that Johnson’s sentencing adequately reflects the seriousness of the charges he is facing. By holding individuals accountable for illegal possession of firearms, communities can work towards a safer future.
