A man tragically lost his life in Salem on Thursday night after being struck by a car. The incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of Mission Street and Hawthorne Avenue southeast. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following reports of a pedestrian hit by a car east of the intersection. Shockingly, the driver involved fled the scene initially.

Responding firefighters soon arrived and pronounced the victim deceased. While it was initially reported as a hit-and-run, the driver responsible for the collision stopped a few blocks away from the crash site and promptly contacted the police. Identified as 69-year-old Daniel Carmona, the driver is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

At this time, authorities are withholding the identification of the pedestrian, a 51-year-old man, until his family can be properly informed about the tragic accident. The intersection where the incident occurred remained closed for approximately four hours as investigators examined the scene in painstaking detail.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on our roads. It is crucial for both drivers and pedestrians to prioritize safety and remain vigilant while travelling. Initiatives promoting road safety and awareness are paramount in preventing such heartbreaking accidents from occurring in the future.

As more information becomes available regarding this incident, it is imperative that the community remains attentive to updates from authorities. Striving to prevent future accidents and protect the safety of all individuals on the road should be a shared responsibility.

In another incident, authorities reported an unrelated incident in Clackamas County, where an attempted carjacking resulted in one person being shot and injured at a gas station. The details of this incident are yet to be disclosed, and it is unclear whether any arrests have been made.

These distressing incidents highlight the need for heightened awareness and caution, not only on the roads but in various public spaces. Initiatives aimed at raising awareness about personal safety and emergency preparedness can potentially help mitigate the risks associated with unlawful activities.

The aim should always be to foster safe environments where individuals can confidently go about their daily activities without fear or harm. As investigations progress in both incidents, it is our hope that justice will be served, and measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
