Man Indicted for Murder After Fatal Shooting in Bellport Home
A tragic incident unfolded in a Bellport home, resulting in the untimely death of Ines Reyes. Brent Henry, aged 59, from Riverhead, was indicted on murder charges following the fatal shooting. According to prosecutors, an altercation between the two men escalated into a physical confrontation on Friday, August 18.
The confrontation became heated, leading Reyes and his girlfriend to leave the Bellport home and seek refuge at a relative’s house in East Patchogue. However, the respite was short-lived. Henry appeared at the East Patchogue house and confronted Reyes once again, this time in front of the home. Physical violence ensued, with punches being thrown by both parties.
In a shocking turn of events, Henry retrieved a .40 caliber semi-automatic shotgun from his car and proceeded to shoot Reyes multiple times. The ambulance rushed Reyes to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, but tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Law enforcement arrested Henry the next day, with the indictment taking place on Thursday, August 31. During the court arraignment, he faced charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, both of which are serious felonies. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney expressed determination to prosecute the case aggressively and seek justice for Ines Reyes and his loved ones.
The court ordered Henry’s detention while his case progresses, and he is set to appear in court again on Monday, September 18. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
