Man in Divorce Proceedings Targets Wife at California Bar, Killing Three

A devastating incident has shaken the Trabuco Canyon community in Southern California, as a 59-year-old man launched a violent attack at a bar, targeting his wife, who was in the midst of divorce proceedings. The shocking shooting spree resulted in the death of three innocent individuals and left six others injured.

The gunman, identified as John Snowling, walked into Cook’s Corner bar armed with two firearms. Without any prior altercation, he opened fire on his soon-to-be ex-wife and another woman who was dining with her. Tragically, the wife’s companion succumbed to her injuries on the spot, while the wife was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Don Barnes expressed his heartfelt condolences for the victims and their grieving families.

After firing shots inside the bar, Snowling attempted to flee to a back parking lot area, during which he retrieved two additional weapons. It was at this point that another individual bravely confronted the shooter, resulting in his own injury. Law enforcement authorities swiftly responded to the scene, engaging in a gun battle with Snowling. Tragically, the standoff ended with Snowling losing his life at the hands of law enforcement.

This is an absolute tragic event, and our hearts go out to the entire Trabuco Canyon community, stated Undersheriff Jeff Hallock, emphasizing the significance of Cook’s Corner as a beloved establishment in the area.

The incident further highlights the alarming rate of mass shootings in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, a shocking 465 mass shooting incidents have occurred so far this year alone.

Among the victims was 67-year-old John Leehey, as confirmed by the sheriff. Additionally, six individuals, including Snowling’s wife, sustained injuries during the shooting spree. They were promptly transported to Providence Mission Hospital, where Dr. Tetsuya Takeuchi, the trauma medical director, reported that all of them were in stable condition. Despite two individuals being in serious condition, Takeuchi provided reassurance that the hospital staff was providing the best possible care. One patient has since been discharged. Notably, Snowling’s wife was conscious and awake, and one of her two children was present at the hospital for support.

In a surprising revelation, it was discovered that Snowling had previously served in the Ventura Police Department for 28 years, retiring almost a decade ago, according to a statement released by the department.

This tragic incident serves as a harsh reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures to address gun violence and to prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals within our communities. As the Trabuco Canyon community mourns the loss of innocent lives, support and solidarity from neighboring regions and across the nation are crucial in healing the wounds inflicted by this senseless act of violence.
