Man Found Beaten in Albuquerque Dies: Homicide Investigation Underway
Aug. 12 — In a tragic turn of events, a man who was found severely beaten in Southeast Albuquerque has passed away, prompting investigators to launch a homicide inquiry. The victim, identified as Brian Singer, aged 35, had been taken off life support several weeks after the incident.
According to Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesperson for the Albuquerque police, Singer’s death is now being treated as a homicide. Detectives recently discovered that Singer had succumbed to his injuries.
Singer, who was apparently living on the streets, had previously made headlines in July when he was one of three men arrested for allegedly stealing a significant amount of liquor from a Walgreens. The incident was captured on video by bystanders, garnering public attention. The Second Judicial District Attorney, Sam Bregman, had sought to charge the trio under a new law aimed at combating organized retail crime, which carries more severe penalties.
Although Singer was released from jail the day after being booked, as prosecutors did not request his detention until trial for the property crime, his story took a tragic turn. Days later, on July 17, first responders found Singer near Kentucky and Acoma SE, severely beaten. He was immediately transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
It was on July 26 that hospital staff contacted the police, informing them that Singer was on life support and still unidentified. An investigator was dispatched to the hospital and used Singer’s fingerprints to establish his identity.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Singer succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 4. In light of this devastating outcome, Gallegos urges anyone with information about the fatal beating to come forward and contact Albuquerque Metro Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP. To incentivize potential witnesses, Crime Stoppers has offered a reward for any information leading to an arrest.
This news has sent shockwaves through the community. The tragic death of Brian Singer underscores the urgent need to address violence and crimes affecting vulnerable populations, particularly those living on the streets. It raises important questions about the safety and well-being of individuals in similar circumstances and underscores the importance of preventing such incidents in the future.
As the investigation into Singer’s untimely demise gathers pace, authorities are hoping that the public will step forward with crucial information that may help bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. It is only with the active participation and cooperation of the community that true justice can be served in cases like these.
Our thoughts go out to the family and loved ones of Brian Singer during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace, and may justice be served for this senseless act of violence.
