An Oregon man fired more than 70 shots from a hotel balcony near the Las Vegas Strip on New Year’s Eve, causing over $100,000 in damages to the MGM hotel, according to police reports. Jon Letzkus, 45, made his first appearance in court on Wednesday, with bail set at $500,000. Witnesses reported hearing explosions near the MGM Signature Tower on 135 E. Harmon Ave., leading law enforcement officials to determine that the sounds originated from the upper levels of the hotel. After locating the room where the gunshots were coming from, SWAT officers discovered several spent shell casings and identified Letzkus as the suspect. Letzkus mentioned his marital problems and claimed that he believed people would harm him if he opened the door to them, leading him to barricade the room. MGM Resorts estimates the damage to be over $100,000. The case has shed light on the ongoing divorce proceedings between Letzkus and his estranged wife.
